Why do drains block on this sandy ground?

Four causes sit behind the blockages here, and each wants its own fix:

Fine sand

Grit from the dune country washes through tired joints and drops out wherever the fall flattens, so the bore shrinks year by year.

Tree roots

Gardens planted with the first brick-veneer homes have had half a century to reach the ageing clay pipe, and one hairline crack is enough to let a root in.

A shallow water table

Low ground near the swamp keeps buried lines sitting in wet soil, so water drains slowly even when the pipe itself is clean.

Storm surcharge

The swamp catchment reacts fast to heavy rain, and a surcharged system can push water back up household lines on the lower blocks.

What happens on a drain job?

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

Open the line, then film it

The jetter or the electric eel breaks the choke, and a camera run afterwards shows water moving freely from the fixture to the boundary.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

If the footage shows roots, an open joint or a sagging run, the repair side of the job moves to the child pages listed next.

Jewells Drain Services

Six drain jobs, each with its own page. Pick the one that matches what you are seeing:

Plumber running a drain camera at an outdoor pit

CCTV drain inspection

** footage of the pipe from fixture to boundary, so a dig or reline lands on the right metre.

Plumber working a drain-clearing machine

Drain jetting

** water under pressure that scours packed sand and kitchen grease off the bore.

Plumber laying new pipe in an open trench

Blocked sewer

** every fixture slowing at once and the gully surging, opened up and proven on film.

Plumber installing a strip drain beside a sliding door

Stormwater drains

** yard flooding and downpipe overflow when the swamp catchment surges.

Pipe relining equipment set up in a shower recess

Pipe relining

** a resin sleeve cured inside a cracked clay line, with no trench across the yard.

Tree roots exposed around a pipe in a trench

Tree root removal

** root mats cut back and the joint they came through located, so the choke ends.

Built in one wave, blocking in one wave

One era of pipe

Jewells was carved into lots in the 1920s, but the brick and brick-veneer homes only went up from the 1970s through the 1990s. The drains under them are one generation of clay and earthenware, and they are ageing on one timetable.

Sand and roots work on it together

Sandy soil drifts into any joint that has opened. Mature gardens from that same build-out now push roots toward the moisture, so one weak junction can collect both at once.

Wet ground finishes the picture

A high water table beside the wetland keeps the ground under the slab damp, and a choked line has nowhere to shed its load. Once a pipe blocks, the backup climbs into the house sooner than it would on higher, drier blocks.

Where the drain figure comes from

The number comes from what the plumber finds on your block:

  • The pipe material Clay, earthenware, PVC and polyethylene each clear differently and take different fittings.
  • How deep the line sits A boundary line beneath a raised floor takes more work than a fixture choke two metres from the laundry.
  • What the blockage is A grease plug near the sink is quick work; a root mass at the boundary junction needs the coil and a camera run.
  • Access Reaching a boundary trap down a narrow side passage takes longer than working in an open yard.

What Customers Say

Debbie had a kitchen drain that was more than an S-bend problem:

We talked through the options of our blocked kitchen sink drain (not just an s bend problem) and came to the perfect long term solution at a reasonable price.
Debbie

When we're not the right call. A choke inside the Hunter Water sewer main on the street side of your boundary is the utility's to clear, so we hand you their fault line rather than pricing it. A collapsed retaining wall propping up a drain line is builder's work. Pipes on your side of the boundary are ours.

Drain questions from these streets

Do you clear drains with chemicals?

No. Chemicals shift some grease but do nothing for sand, root mats or a broken pipe section, and they can damage older pipe. We clear with water jetting or the electric eel, then run the camera through to prove the pipe is flowing.

My drain keeps blocking again and again. Why?

Repeat blockages on this sandy ground tend to trace to one of two things: fine sand working into a joint, or roots finding an ageing clay junction. A camera run shows which it is, and the footage tells you whether a patch, a reline or a full dig-up is the honest fix.

Can you find the blockage without digging up the yard?

Yes. The drain camera and the pipe locator pin down the fault's position and depth, so any digging stays small and aimed. A clearing job finishes with the camera showing water moving freely end to end.

Does the wetland make drain problems worse here?

It does on the lower blocks. A shallow water table beside the swamp keeps lines saturated and slow to empty, and a heavy storm can surcharge the system. If your drains go quiet after rain, that pattern points to the connection rather than the fixtures.
