A Mining Township That Became a Surf Suburb

Streets from an 1894 survey

Redhead was laid out as a private coal township in 1894, with Beach Road as its original way down to the sand. The township core still drains through glazed clay sitting in shifting sand, and a century of movement has rotated and parted the joints, so one bad section can slow a whole run behind the dunes.

Steel pipe and salt wind

Some of the weatherboard cottages from the late-1920s land sales still run water through old galvanised services that deliver a rusty first flow, and the onshore wind off Redhead Beach works into outdoor copper and tank casings year round. Census figures put 92.5 per cent of the 1416 dwellings as separate houses, so most of that hardware sits out in the weather on detached blocks.

Sand and scrub roots

Fine dune sand settles into gully traps and cracked pipes near the surf, and the roots of the native scrub hunt out every gap in the older sewers. One decent storm can fill a tired line with silt from end to end.
